Widely used treatments for type 2 diabetes have different effects on the hearts of men and women, even as the drugs control blood sugar equally well in both sexes, according to School of Medicine researchers. The investigators used PET scans to measure heart and whole-body metabolism in patients taking common diabetes drugs.

Steven C. George, MD, PhD, has been named chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, effective July 1. George is a professor of biomedical engineering and of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of California, Irvine.

The deadline to apply for the 2014 Global Diversity Overseas Seminar program has been extended until noon Friday, Jan. 10. It is a staff-development opportunity involving seminar meetings, group discussions and assigned readings culminating in a week-long trip abroad. This year, the group heads to Ghana.
